But because you can meet people from the comfort of your home, there isn't a big need for a bunch of gay bars. Despite what some may think, there is still some danger in showing affection in public if you are gay. I think you'll always have Axis and Union and maybe Level. It wasn't long before people started skipping the bar scene all together. They often mimicked different bar crowds (lesbian, bears, etc.). When Grindr hit the scene in 2009 (I think), it was a big deal because you could meet guys that were geographically close to you. It used to be that if you wanted to meet people for friendship, relationships, or hook ups, you went to the bar that best associated with your kind of crowd.īut apps have made it simple to meet people for the things above without having to go to a bar. A big reason for the demise of Columbus' gay and lesbian bars is the creation of apps like Grindr, Growlr, and Scruff. I've talked to a few friends about this in the past. I'm not interested in fake people either! I'm just curious as to where the 20 something quieter crowds go anymore! Granted, I would never call any of the bars I listed above as "quiet" places, I was simply referencing the fact that a number of LGBT bars have shut down in the city! I have heard that many of the college aged LGBT folks just go to "straight" or "regular" bars and actually have much success in meeting people, networking, dates, etc. I am not one to put on a dog and pony show to try and impress someone at these places. So I'm just wondering, where do the non-party, non-hip, just want to sit back and drink types of LGBT people go to meet other people? Disclaimer: I myself am LGBT, and find the crowds at Union/Axis type bars to be very off putting. These clubs seem to cater to a very specific type of LGBT crowd, the ultra hip and constant party type of crowd. However there isn't a very diverse clientele at either location, at least to me. What is changing in the LGBT community that gay/lesbian bars are no longer capable of staying in business? Union and Axis are always crowded. I've lived in this city for a number of years now, and bars such as Q, Pyramid, Score, Tradewinds, James' Club 88, Havana, Surly Girl (not really a gay bar but did have a diverse clientele), and I'm sure a few other bars have all gone by the wayside in the past 6 or so years. This makes me wonder what's going on in the LGBT community.
going out of business and Club 20 having sold to new owners. This falls quick on the heels of Wall St. It does not store any personal data.So I've been out of town for a while, but heard through my friends that the Exile bar (formerly Eagle/Eagle in Exile) has gone out of business.
